Transforming Lives of People from Incest

Joanne Mindy Lee

by Karen Lee

As a result of growing up in an Incest-energied family dynamic, I was compelled to create the Joanne Lee Foundation, Inc. in honor of my deceased sister, Joanne Mindy Lee. Joanne was tragically impacted by being incested and was constrained by her past ~ she tried to cover up her pain and anguish with alcohol, drugs and anorexia/bulimia. She finally took one last gasp on March 22, 2006, dying at the age of 34 in the home we grew up in.

Naturally drawn to horses as a very young girl, I have always had an inexplicable affinity with them. Though, I was extremely shy and rarely spoke, I initiated my own horseback riding lessons at age seven, whereby I trespassed onto our neighbor's estate and got up enough courage to ask the teacher if I could take lessons from her? She said that I had to ask my mother first and so I did. Thank goodness my mother said yes – and I have been in love with horses ever since. I truly feel that they saved my life.

This early childhood kinship was profoundly foundational in building my sense of self. I was able to relate and connect to the horse in such a way that was safer than connecting to human beings, including my parents and siblings. In retrospect, I am able to see how this mystical connection has EMPOWERED me over my life time and I am compelled to share this with the world...
